Cuprous oxide is also known as an inorganic compound of copper oxide
Overview of Cuprous oxide Cu2O Powder
Cuprous oxide, the chemical formula is Cu2O, is monovalent copper oxide, a bright red powder solid, almost insoluble in water, in acidic solution disproportionation into copper and copper elemental, in the wet air gradually oxidized into black copper oxide. Cuprous oxide is mainly used in the manufacture of ship bottom antifouling paint(used to kill lower Marine animals), insecticides, and various copper salts, analytical reagents, red glass, but also used in the preparation of copper plating and copper plating alloy solution.
Copper(I)oxide is also known as an inorganic compound of copper oxide with the chemical formula Cu2O. It's essentially covalent. The copper(I)oxide crystallizes in a cubic structure. When heated, hydrogen tends to reduce the disproportionation it undergoes in acidic solutions that produce copper (II) ions and copper. When the copper oxide is gently heated with metal copper, it is converted to cuprous oxide. It acts as a good corrosion resistance due to the surface reaction between copper and oxygen in the air, getting a thin protective oxide layer.
Cuprous oxide has a relative density of 6.04 and a melting point of 1235℃. When heated to 1800 ° C, it can undergo decomposition and release oxygen. Although present stably, it can be gradually oxidized to copper oxide in wet air. It is insoluble in water and ethanol, soluble in dilute sulfuric acid, and can disproportionate copper sulfate and metal copper. When dissolved in nitric acid, it can be oxidized to copper nitrate. It can be dissolved in concentrated hydrochloric acid or ammonia and produces stable complexes H3[CuCl4]or colorless complexes[Cu (NH3) 2] +, respectively. The latter can be easily oxidized to the blue [Cu (NH3) 4] 2+ by air.
Cuprous oxide is essentially present in the form of copper. This can be obtained by adding an appropriate amount of hydrate to a solution of copper acetate or by adding a reducing agent such as glucose (adding sodium tartrate or sodium citrate to prevent the precipitation of the copper salts). Cuprous oxide is available in different sizes, including yellow, red, or brown, depending on the preparation method and particle size.
Copper oxide can be used as a colorant (red) in the manufacture of red glass, red enamels, and ceramics, Marine primers, agricultural fungicides, organic synthesis catalysts, rectifying materials and undercoating, as well as in the electroplating industry and as catalysts for organic synthesis.
Cuprous oxide is prepared by calcining the precipitated copper powder and the mixture of precipitated copper powder and copper oxide in the sealed closed system.
Applications of Cuprous oxide Cu2O Powder
Cuprous oxide is commonly used as a pigment, fungicide, and antifouling agent for Marine coatings. Rectifier diodes based on this material had been used in industry only before 1924 before silicon became the standard.
1. Cu2O can be used for ship bottom coating, can effectively control corrosion, pesticide juice, and glaze, and used in copper oxide rectifier, photocell, electroplating, and copper salt production.
2. Cu2O can be used in the manufacture of antifouling coatings (used to kill lower Marine animals), pesticides and various copper salts, analytical reagents, and red glass. It can also be used in rectifier electroplating in the electrical industry. It can also be used as a colorant for ceramics and enamels.
3. Cu2O can be used as an analytical reagent and a fungicide and seed dressing.
4. Cu2O can be used as a reducing agent for the determination of nitrogen content in azo compounds, red glazes, electroplating, fungicides, red glass, Marine primers, plant seed sterilization, and catalysts.
5. Used as the p-type semiconductor material, used in the manufacture of photoelectric meters and the manufacture of rectifier photocells.
